The clearest signs a house needs rewiring are all about age and heat. A fuse box full of old rewireable fuses (ceramic holders with wire in them), rubber, fabric or lead-coated cabling, sockets that feel warm or look discoloured, scorch marks, a faint tingle off switches or a burning smell all point to wiring that's past its safe life. So does relying on extension leads because there simply aren't enough sockets. Not every older home needs the full job though, so the honest answer is to have it looked at rather than assume the worst.

Does an old house always need a full rewire?
No. Age alone isn't a reason to rewire, and plenty of older Bristol homes just need a partial job or a new consumer unit. We inspect first and tell you honestly what's actually needed, and never recommend a full rewire you don't need.
