Adding a Battery to Solar Panels You Already Have

If you already have panels, a battery is usually the next thing worth doing. Without one, the power your roof makes in the middle of the day goes back to the grid, then you buy it back at a much higher price in the evening. A battery keeps it in the house instead. Nothing about the panels changes and nothing comes off the roof.

The first job is the inverter. Some existing systems take a battery straight onto the kit that is already there. Others are better off with a second unit that sits beside the old one and charges the battery from the house side. Which route suits you comes down to the age of your system, the make of the inverter and where the meter sits. We look at all of that before we quote, so you get one price with no surprise extras once we start.

We do this work across Bristol on systems fitted by other companies, including ones where the original installer has long gone. Your existing export arrangement stays as it is. We are MCS certified, we notify your network operator, and we test and certify the work so the whole system is properly documented again.

Inverter checked first

We identify your inverter and its age before quoting, so we know which battery route your system actually supports.

Panels untouched

No scaffold and nothing comes off the roof. All the work is at the inverter, the battery and the fuse board.

Old systems welcome

We take on systems fitted years ago by other firms, including ones where the original installer is no longer trading.

Export kept in order

Your existing export arrangement carries on. We notify the network operator and certify the work so the records stay right.

Your questions, answered

Will a battery work with my existing panels?

Almost always, yes. The question is how. Some inverters take a battery directly, others need a separate unit alongside them. We check the make, model and age of yours first, then tell you which route your system needs and what it costs.

Do I lose my export payments if I add a battery?

No. Adding storage does not end your existing export arrangement. You simply export less because you are using more of your own power, which is the point. We keep the paperwork in order and notify your network operator.

Does the roof need scaffolding again?

No. A retrofit is all done indoors at the inverter, the battery position and the fuse board. The panels and the roof are left alone, so it is a much smaller job than the original install.

My installer has gone out of business. Can you still help?

Yes, and we see it often. We work out what you have got, check it is safe and working, then quote the battery on top. You end up with a system that is documented and certified again, whoever fitted the panels.
